Our story

The New Ross Piano Festival was originally created by a serendipitous partnership between the local voluntary music organisation, Music for New Ross, and the internationally acclaimed concert pianist Finghin Collins. In 2006 our festival began with a clear vision, to celebrate the piano and invite world-class pianists to perform in our local town of New Ross.

Year on year we host an exciting programme of piano concerts, featuring original collaborations between our artists across a variety of classical genres, not to mention our Jazz Day that features a lunchtime and evening concert. In past years we have had the great pleasure of welcoming pianists from Japan, Korea, China, the USA and many European countries.

Our piano festival is a five day event that takes place over the last full weekend of September. We hold the majority of our concerts in the wonderful venue of St. Mary’s Church in New Ross. Find out more about our town of New Ross.

Our 2018 piano festival

This year we present the Irish debut of two very different pianists: Anne-Marie McDermott, “one of the great American pianists of her generation”, who has a major career as a soloist and chamber musician in the USA and beyond, but has never played in her ancestral home of Ireland; and the Romanian pianist Alexandra Dariescu, recently named by International Piano Magazine as ‘one of 30 pianists under 30 destined for a spectacular career’. Anne-Marie, Alexandra and the festival’s Artistic Director Finghin Collins will be joined by outstanding Bulgarian violinist Svetlin Roussev and French cellist Marc Coppey for performances of three glorious piano trios.

Our popular weekend coffee concerts will be given by François Dumont from France and Marcos Madrigal from Cuba. Young Waterford pianist Billy O’Brien will fill the new Friday coffee concert slot, a free event specifically geared towards younger ears. David Greilsammer will return to perform the fascinating late-night programme “Labyrinth” from which he had to withdraw last year due to ill-health.

For the second year running we present our Jazz Piano Day, this year on Thursday September 27th, again curated by Phil Ware. The headline act will be Swedish pianist and composer Lars Jansson, who is acclaimed in Scandinavia and throughout Europe for his eclectic performances and improvisations.

We look forward to welcoming you to St. Mary’s in New Ross in the closing days of September to enjoy a great range of piano music!
